project management made easy
25/06/2007 — KristinHere’s a great tool to help any team complete a project, one-off or ongoing. It’s called Basecamp.
Totally web-based with the ability to set milestones, place to-do lists, add comments and post messages. We’re using it for Availabuild and it’s been a real asset.
Much better than using email.
There’s a free version which isn’t too shabby. If you want to send attachments etc. there’s also an upgrade version.
Google Search Tips – anything and everything
18/06/2007 — KristinThe Google Story is a good read. Here’s a few of the search tips they gave at the end which I enjoyed:
- Take a magic ~ ride. The tilde character “~” in the corner of your keyboard is a handy tool in Google searches. Put it before a word, with no space between, to have google look for pages with both that term and its synonyms. Example: A search for ~auto will also turn up Web pages that use the terms cars, trucks, automobiles, and more.
plus a few of the more obvious yet often overlooked capabilities of Google:
- Google can be your calculator
- …..dictionary
- …..weatherman
I also recently found the ‘distance in kilometres’ and ‘estimated driving time’ between Greytown and Pahiatua when asked by an in-transit mobile using family member who was late for a Trade Me sales pickup.
My new mindset for Google: try find anything and everything you need… no matter how obscure it may seem.

Tradesmen don’t dislike web innovation…
02/06/2007 — Kristin… they just want it packaged in a hassle free way. It’s often said Tradesmen are set in their ways and anti-web. Our experience is showing this to be untrue. Tradesmen are constantly using better and faster tools to make their physical job easier, so the response to having a web-page for their business which is simple to use, has been mostly a positive one. In our experience, tradesmen are very receptive to the use of helpful web-based tools that will enhance their business. As long as it’s a hassle free process.
